A Day Trip to Ohara in Kyoto

White clouds in the high sky. Spreading wide rice fields.
Nostalgic Japanese scenery awaits you in Ohara.

It is a calm remote land that depicts a relaxing holiday of Japan as it is. When we encounter such scenery, we say, “ほっとする(Hottosuru) = I feel relieved”.

This is my half-day trip itinerary to relax in Ohara.

A Day Trip to Ohara in Kyoto

My Itinerary

  • 08:30 am: Departure to Ohara
  • 9:30 am: Visit to Sanzen-in Temple
  • 11:30 pm: Looking for souvenirs
  • 0:30 pm: Lunch
  • 2:00 pm: Departure from Ohara

Ohara is an area where you can spend unwind time. While most visitors head for the moss-covered temple Sanzen-in, you’ll also find several other charming temples scattered throughout the region.

Want to find some nice shops and restaurants? Simply wander along the streets connecting temples!

Getting there

The public transportation to Ohara is only buses. But it’s quite easy to access. As with other popular destinations in Kyoto, direct buses are available.

  • Kyoto station – Ohara / 60min (Direct bus)
  • Kyoto station – Kokusaikaikan station – Ohara / 20min+20min

The last bus stop Ohara is the nearest station to Sanzenin Temple.

Sanzen-in Temple

Visiting Hours: 9:00- 17:00
Admission fee: ¥700

In the long history of Kyoto, which is steeped in the fragrance of Buddhism, two legendary monks stand out: Saicho and Kukai. They were the ones who established Japanese Buddhism, which is still practiced today.

Sanzen-in Temple is associated with Saicho, his home base is Mt. Hiei near Ohara, which is the head temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism.

Although Sanzen-in temple has changed its location several times, it is still an excellent temple that has spun out 1,200 years of history since he was alive.

Let’s take pictures of these cute Jizo statues! In fact, they are rather newcomers placed there relatively recently. But they have already become familiar faces.

Souvenirs

The approach to the temple is lined with stores with a traditional atmosphere as if time has stood still.

Try Shibazuke, a type of red pickle unique to Ohara. Or Shichimi (seven spices), Miso (bean paste), Handmade Chopsticks, Jizo goods… oops, time flies!

Lunch

Somushi Ohara
Korean Bibimbap ¥2,000

Do you want to have lunch at a fancy little restaurant? Then, take a little more walk. There is a nice Korean restaurant beloved by the locals on the way to Jakkoin Temple

Their specialty is Korean Bibimbap, made with love. Savor the hearty flavors of the seasonal fresh vegetables from Ohara. And to enjoy a home-grown herbal tea can also be a good choice.

Photo Gallery

I had returned home at this point though, there are a few more places worth visiting. I highly recommend visiting Hosen-in Temple and Ohara-sanso Ashiyu cafe (Foot spa).
