Want to feel full of summer in Kyoto? Then…
There’s no doubt that visiting Kifune Shrine is the perfect choice.
Serving as the headquarters for about 2,000 water deities across the nation, Kifune Shrine lies among the mountains with a pure river flowing gently beside it – A water sanctuary.
Located just about an hour away from the city center. It’s a convenient day trip destination, contrary to its rich nature. I went there on the day I happened to get up early. By the time I returned home, my mind was as clear as the summer sky.
A Scenic Train Ride
The journey to Kifune Shrine becomes an enjoyable part of the experience, starting with a train ride.
- To Demachiyanagi sta. (15 mins):
The first step is to head to Demachiyanagi Station from your hotel. You can buy a day ticket for 2,000 yen, so if you might drop by other than Kifune, it’ll be a good deal. - To Kibuneguchi sta. (30 mins):
Transfer to the Eizan Line. This is where the excitement begins! Don’t miss “The Tunnel of Momiji leaves.” The view from the square window is full of greenery. - To Kifune Shrine(10 mins):
The final step is to take a bus to the Shrine. (It’s a 30-minute uphill walk on foot.) There’s a bus stop right in front of the train station. You’ll likely find someone already in line.
Kibeneguchi station is now completely in nature, so there is no spot to kill time. It is better to buy bottled water and other necessities at Demachiyanagi station.
Things To Do at Kifune Shrine
Kifune Shrine consists of three separate shrines extending deep into the mountains. Wearing comfortable cloths and shoes is good for you.
Worship at the 3 sacred Shrines
Photo Spot: Take a picture first! The iconic photo spot is the entrance stairs lined with vibrant red lanterns. It instantly beckons you into the world of the divine.
Fortune slip: Want to try some enchanting experience? The first shrine “Hon-gu 本宮” has a special one called “Mizuura-mikuji 水占みくじ.” Once Soaking a blank piece of paper in sacred water… Amazing! The oracle letters appear mysteriously.
Wishing for Love: The middle shrine “Yuinoyashiro 結社 ” is renowned as a power spot for “love fulfillment”. “結 means Bond”, such a wonderful sound. Just put your hands together in front of the shrine and chant your wish in your heart.
Feel the Forest: The rear shrine “Okumiya 奥宮” is where you will encounter the” Dragon’s den.” Please note, we can’t see any amazing objects, because the Dragon dwells under the ground. So just feel the sacred air growing clearer with each step.

Summer River Dining
After the worship, it’s time for lunch! Have you ever heard “Kawadoko 川床” ? This is exactly what makes Kibune Shrine the place to go in Summer!
Did you hear the sound of the river? This is it! A unique summer-only dining experience.
The traditional “Kaiseki” course meal is the classic choice. It might be pricey (around 10,000 yen) and often requires reservations. But no worries.
There are some Kawadoko-style cafes
where you can drop in,
for those like me who prefer a casual visit.
The combined cost of a drink with seating was around ¥1,000. The cool river water worked wonders in refreshing my tired feet. This will be a really rich experience for you.
Hiking to Kurama Temple
If you are a nature lover, you should know about the Hiking trail.
As you head back to Kibune station, you’ll come across signs on your left-hand side. This is the starting point for a hike to Kurama Temple. It takes about 1 to 2 hours, with an uphill route from Kifune.
I got exhausted from the heat, so I had to skip it this time. For those with not much stamina, it might be a bit challenging to cover everything. But If you try, Tengu will be waiting for you.
